A potter, he understood what Lansbury was looking for because he had created a version of the vision himself, a house inspired by the traditional masonry farmhouses with slate roofs. One day, while they were staying with friends in their country house, she took a long walk that led to a field of wildflowers and grass, and a meadow beyond, on a cliff overlooking the sea. There something wonderful about looking out at sea and the nothingness. When both of her children struggled with drugs in the late 1960s (her daughter, Lansbury revealed in a 2014 interview, “was in with a crowd led by Charles Manson”), she decided to move the family from Malibu to County Cork, Ireland. They spent the 1970s there; later, while filming Murder, She Wrote in Los Angeles, Lansbury felt the pull of Ireland again.

We went subterranean with bartender Connor Haught to check out Foley’s newest addition, Micx, which has been open for a couple of weeks and features — are you ready? We were pretty shocked ourselves, but there it was, a dueling piano bar as if straight out of a Las Vegas casino. As if that wasn’t entertaining enough, we got to hang out with Haught and his colleagues, who had plenty to say about Foley’s, St. Patrick’s Day and Guinness. Moreover, a lot of the staff are Irish so it is very similar to the great ones in Ireland. With restaurants and bars shutting their doors amid this chaotic atmosphere, it’s a tough time to talk celebrating St. Patrick’s Day.
Johnny Foley’s Irish House
He made his way to San Francisco and was very much a part of the Hippie movement and The Summer of Love. Its authentic Irish elements are reminiscent of pubs in Ireland itself, moreover, Foley’s offers nightly entertainment that includes rock n’ roll cover bands and solo performers, setting it apart from other pubs that may lack that famously exuberant pub energy. Located conveniently nearby the city’s bustling Union Square and theater district, this Irish restaurant and pub features both classic Irish dishes, alongside a selection of steaks and Internationally-inspired plates. With several semi-private areas divided by low walls and exquisite carved columns, we are among the best Union Square restaurants for a deliciously satisfying dinner; whether on an intimate date for 2 or entertaining a group of clients, friends or family.
Born of painstaking attention to decorative detail and insistence on true craftsmanship, Johnny Foley's Irish House recalls the days when it was as vital to please the eye as the palette. Such pubs were usually found in the busier urban areas where patrons found solace away from the general hustle and bustle of city life or enjoyed a lively evening with friends in a convivial atmosphere. It was customary to find a series of "snugs" (small separately enclosed areas), within the traditional openness of these urban pubs. This year is a bit of an unusual one considering Covid-19 but Foley’s usually has live music all day and is jam packed once the bar opens its doors. The bar has a set menu and it’s a great atmosphere because you don’t just get your typical bar goers.

Great for groups, we are known for authetic comfort dishes including Vegetarian and Gluten Free offerings, Kid’s Favorites and luscious Desserts made in-house. By a sleight of hand, the house that seems so small and intimate outside expands inside. “We never intended it to be so big, but Stephen would tell us what we needed was a few more feet, that the hall should be a little wide,” she says. The big hall gives onto a surprisingly large, loftlike living space, with an open corner kitchen that serves the surrounding dining and living areas. “It's a house where you can paint, listen to music and just indulge yourself in the most unstructured way,” says Lansbury.
Marvin Drabinsky of Northridge came to show off Darby, his Irish wolfhound. Eighty-six of the large dogs, formerly used for hunting, raced against each other Sunday morning, said Jeannine Roman, who chaired the Irish wolfhound division of the festival. Since 1974, the Irish Fair Foundation, an organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Irish and Irish-American culture in Southern California, has sponsored the fair. Vivid shades of green brightened the Los Angeles Equestrian Center on Sunday, the second day of the festival, which drew about 50,000 people. Songwriter Johnny Cash was referring to the Irish landscape when he wrote “Forty Shades of Green,” but he could have been talking about this weekend’s Grand National Irish Fair in Burbank.
